Full ReviewThe Bell F12 bike computer is one of the most inexpensive bicycle computers on the market. Despite its low price, it manages to deliver everything you expect from a basic bicycle computer, including average speed, trip meter and total distance. The F12 comes with a battery, magnet, sensor, display unit, a bracket for the display unit, a battery and cable ties.
Features and DisplayThe display screen of this Bell bike computer is not as large as some other bike computers we’ve reviewed, but the current speed is at least displayed in the larger, top portion of the screen. The bottom portion of the screen displays the total distance travelled (in miles or kilometers) with an accuracy of three decimal places. The computer can display the following metrics: current speed, average speed, maximum speed, total distance, trip distance, trip timer and speed comparator.
The Bell F12 also supports Auto Start/Stop, which means you do not have to manually start it on each ride. An unusual and useful feature of the F12 is that it displays what it calls the “Speed Tendency,” which shows whether the rider is accelerating or decelerating, shown by an icon on the display screen at all times. The rider can jump through the different metrics displayed on the bottom field by pressing the right-hand button. The device can also be used in SCAN mode, which rotates through four main metrics automatically.
Installing and Programming the ComputerThe Bell bike computer’s manual explains the process of the initial setup, during which you will enter various values and statistics to personalize the computer readings. For example, you are asked to enter the circumference of your wheels so the computer can accurately calculate your bike speed and distance travelled.Be warned that there is at least one error in the manual where it says that the odometer can be reset by pressing the Left and Right button together for 3 seconds. This actually resets the whole computer!
To reset the odometer, you only need to press the left-hand button for three seconds. Hopefully, this will be corrected in future printings of the manual. The F12 comes with cable ties to attach the different parts of the computer to the bike. The instruction manual is actually fairly easy to follow and includes all the steps required to install the sensor and magnet, and connect them to the display unit.
ConclusionIf you want an inexpensive device that will give you some basic metrics, the Bell F12 should fit the bill (pun intended). It can record and show 12 different metrics, which is enough to get you going. Moreover, we don’t know of any other bike computer that shows you distance travelled with accuracy of up to three digits, so this is a good choice if precision is your game.Amazon: Bell Bike Computer Demo Video.
